LEEYANGHEE SANJO, MASS

At GIAF25, Yanghee Lee performed LEEYANGHEE SANJO every Saturday and Sunday, led workshop MASS on Fridays, and exhibited LEEYANGHEE IPCHUM throughout the weekdays at Small Theater Dan.

In MASS, Lee guided participants through a sensory exploration of the body, drawing on shinmuyong and club dance—two core sources of her dance style. The workshop began with exercises to awaken the body, blending the spontaneous energy of club dance with the grounded breathings and refined lines of traditional dance. Rather than imposing fixed movements or strict instructions, she encouraged participants to follow the impulses of their own bodies. In doing so, each person was able to immerse themselves in the flow of movement, discovering their own rhythms and sensations.

Although Lee typically designs her workshops with precision, this time she allowed the structure to shift fluidly in response to the atmosphere of the space and the energy of the participants. Building on her prior workshops which invite artists and art enthusiasts to engage, Lee created a one-day workshop MASS that allowed participation across age, gender, and experience levels. In MASS, participants moved fluidly between observing and performing, engaging in an improvisational exchange of roles. Individual gestures expanded into collective rhythm, and through dancing alongside one another, participants formed new relationships grounded in movement. During GIAF25, Lee continuously revised and expanded MASS, ultimately creating a “gathering without purpose”—a moment of pure, unstructured togetherness.
