Sinyeong Theater

Established in 2012, Sinyeong Theater is the only cinematheque in Gangwon-do exclusively dedicated to independent and art films. It reopened on the site the former “Shin-Yeong Theater,” a landmark cinema in Gangneung since the 1960s, which had connected citizens and films for 11 years. Since 1996, the cinema has been operated by Gangneung Cinematheque, a non-profit private organization that has hosted Jeongdongjin Independent Film Festival since 1999. Shin-Yeong Cinematheque screens both Korean independent films and international art films, including curated films by renowned directors such as Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, and more. It also provides Gangneung citizens with opportunities
to explore and interpret films through diverse programs, including lectures and small gatherings.
With a 4K digital projection system and 111 seats, including wheelchair accessibility, the cinema features a lobby with vintage film magazines, books, and DVDs available for rent. At Gangneung International Art Festival 2023(GIAF23), the cinema introduced the works of Francis Alÿs, receiving an enthusiastic response from the audience. Building on this success, Gangneung International Art Festival 2025(GIAF25) presents the works of Ho Tzu Nyen at the venue. Through these initiatives, Sinyeong Theater continues to showcase the works of artists nationwide and abroad, offering a variety of artistic experiences to the citizens of Gangneung.
