Becoming Birds: Practice of Snakes, Water, and Birds
<비커밍 버즈: 뱀, 물, 새의 연습>은 흑표범 작가의 진행으로 강릉에서 살고 있는 서로 다른 배경의 학생들과 퍼포먼스를 수행하는 프로그램이다. 작가와 기획팀 그리고 (사)다봄인권센터가 협력·기획해, 강릉 옥계면의 이을학교 어린이·청소년들과 타국에서 강릉으로 이주해 온 강릉해람중학교 한국어학급 청소년들을 지역의 숲과 마을에서 만난다. 대관령의 입구이자 출구인 어흘리에 위치한 국립대관령치유의숲과 옥계 마을을 배경으로, 인간과 비인간 존재가 우정을 기반으로 공생하는 삶을 모색한다. 작가와 참여자들은 숲 속이나 마을의 식물, 새 등과 같은 비인간 존재를 탐구하고 이를 우리가 당면하고 있는 소수자 이슈를 연결해 바라보는 시간을 가진다. 시각이 아닌 후각과 열로 대상을 알아차리는 뱀, 대상을 구별하지 않고 흐르는 물, 두려움 없이 날기 위한 새의 연습이라는 회차별 주제를 통해 참여자들은 비인간이 되어보는 감각의 수행으로써 퍼포먼스 과정을 경험한다. 이러한 ‘비커밍’의 과정을 통해 참여자들은 시각 중심의 사고에서 벗어나 다양한 감각을 바탕으로 타인과 소통하는 연습을 하게 된다.

Becoming Birds: The Practice of Snakes, Water, and Birds is a performance program organized by Black Jaguar in collaboration with students from diverse backgrounds currently residing in Gangneung. The artist, the GIAF Curatorial team, and the Dabom Human Rights Center have joined forces to orchestrate an event that brings together students from Ieul School in Okgye-myeon and Gangneung Haeram Middle School KSL (Korean as a Second Language) learners, who have migrated to Gangneung from other countries. This initiative seeks to create a gathering of these students in the local forest and village. The program unfolds in Eoheul-ri, which serves as both the entrance and exit of the National Center for Forest Therapy in Daegwallyeong and Okgye-myeon. Building upon these diverse backgrounds, students will cultivate a symbiotic relationship that spans the divide between humans and non-humans. Through the program, the artist and students create connections with non-human subjects, including plants and birds, coexisting within forests and villages, while also addressing the pertinent issues faced by minority groups. Guided by themes such as ‘snakes–relying on smell and heat rather than sight in perceiving objects,’ ‘water– flowing indiscriminately across boundaries,’ and ‘birds–practicing fearless flight,’ students will immerse themselves in non-human perspectives, thereby enriching their sensory awareness. Active participation in these activities aims to cultivate new relationships based on processes of ‘becoming’ that transcend sight-centric knowledge.
