박선민은 사물의 크기나 형태와 같은 외적인 현상에 집중하는 동시에 이를 작가의 내면적인 성질을 연결짓는 작업을 이어오고 있다. 이번 페스티벌에서 작가는 노암동에 위치한 노암터널*에 주목했다. 작가는 유구한 시간을 품은 노암터널을 카메라 렌즈로 관찰하며 산을 뚫어 만든 터널의 구조적 특성과 이 곳을 오가는 사람들의 모습에 집중했다. “노암터널의 산이 거인의 머리라고 할 때 터널의 양쪽 입구들은 두 눈과 두 귀처럼 감각기관이 될 수 있지 않을까” 상상한 작가는 이러한 감각의 통로를 오가는 동네 사람들의 모습을 오래도록 바라 보았다. 사람들이 터널을 오가며 자아내는 꾸미지 않는 소리와 함께 흘러나오고 있는 음악은 브루클린 출신 음악가인 데이비드 그럽스의 <부서진 우산들의 동네>(2018) 이다. 그럽스는 뉴욕의 다른 구역과 달리 서민적인 동네인 브루클린은 좋은 우산을 사기보다 급할 때 저렴하게 살 수 있으나 쉽게 망가져 버리는 우산을 쓰고 다니는 브루클린 주민들의 모습을 표현했다. 우연히 접한 이 음악에서 평범한 오늘을 살아가는 노암동의 풍경이 그려진 작가는 음악과 터널 소리의 울림를 함께 들려주며, 소시민적 삶을 살아가는 노암동 주민을 다정히 바라보게 한다.

This time, the artist directs the attention to the Noam Tunnel located in Noam-dong. Observing the Noam Tunnel through the lens of a camera, the artist concentrated on the structural characteristics of the tunnel and the people who pass through it. Imagining the tunnel’s entrances as sensory organs, like the eyes and ears if the mountain would be the head of a giant, the artist observed the local people passing through this sensory pathway. The music playing behind the unadorned sounds produced by people passing through the tunnel is from an album by David Grubbs called Borough of Broken Umbrellas(2018). Grubbs portrays the residents of Brooklyn, a working-class neighborhood, who opt for cheap, easily damaged umbrellas you would rather get when in a hurry, instead of investing on expensive ones. Drawing a connection between the daily landscape of Noam-dong and the music, Sunmin Park conveys the resonance of the music and the ordinary sounds of the tunnel, offering a heartfelt perspective on the lives of the residents of Noam-dong.
*노암터널
제1회 강릉국제아트페스티벌(GIAF22) 《강릉연구》의 페스티벌 장소이었던 노암터널은 1900년대 초 일제강점기에 수탈을 위해 생겨난 이후 6.25전쟁 때에는 민간인 학살이 자행되었던 아픈 역사를 간직한 장소이다. 1960년대부터는 기찻길로 활용되었고 시간이 흘러 KTX 철로 공사 사업이 이루어지며 현재 우리가 알고 있는 모습인 공원이자 산책로로 재탄생하였다. 이처럼 사회적 변화와 요구에 따라 변화하는 일종의 정치적 풍경이었던 노암터널은 현재 노암동 주민들이 산책하고 쉬는 공간으로 그들의 삶에 녹아들어 또 다른 풍경을 만들어가고 있다.
*Noam Tunnel, previously introduced at the 1st Gangneung International Art Festival(GIAF22), holds a painful history. It was created during the early 1900s under Japanese colonial rule for the purpose of plundering. During the Korean War in 1950-1953, it became a site of civilian massacres. From the 1960s, it was utilized as a railway track, and over time, with the construction of the KTX railway, it transformed into a park and promenade that we know today. Due to societal shifts and demands, the political landscape it once used to be is now transitioning into a different landscape where the residents of Noam-dong can take a walk and relax, blending into their daily lives.

박선민은 서울대학교 미술대학 조소과를 졸업한 후 독일로 이주해 뒤셀도르프 쿤스트아카데미에서 마이스터슐러를 받았으며 로즈마리 트로켈을 사사했다. 작가는 사진, 영상, 드로잉, 공간 설치, 출판, 디자인 등 다양한 매체를 아우르며 문명과 자연, 안과 밖 등 이항적 세계의 관계에 질문을 던진다. 자신과 세계 사이의 거리를 조절하고 변주하며 대상을 응시하는 작가는 카메라 렌즈로 자연 현상을 미시적으로 관찰하면서 이를 거울삼아거시적 시선으로 도시의 불안정한 삶의 균열에서 드러나는 파편을 해독한다.
주요 개인전으로 《메아리와 서리의 도서관》(페리지갤러리, 2023), 《A Walk into You》(원앤제이 갤러리,2022), 《고속도로 기하학》(스페이스 윌링앤딜링, 2015) 등이 있으며, 주요 그룹전으로는 《Tacks and Traces》(쿤스트페어라인 노이하우젠, 독일, 2023), 《시간을 소장하는 일에 대하여》(백남준아트센터, 2023) 등이 있다.
Sunmin Park graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the Seoul National University of Fine Arts and moved to Germany, where the artist received a Meisterschüler under the guidance of Rosemary Trockel at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. The artist’s work encompasses a variety of media, including photography, video, drawing, spatial installation, publishing, and design, to question the relationship between the binary worlds of civilization and nature, inside and outside. Modulating and changing the distance between the artist’s self and the world, the artist gazes at objects, observing natural phenomena through the lens of a camera at a micro level and mirroring them at a macro level to decipher the fragments found in the cracks of unstable life in the city.
The artist’s major solo exhibitions include The Library of Echo and Frost(Perigee Gallery, 2023), A Walk into You(One and J. Gallery, 2022), and Highway Geometry(Willing N Dealing, 2015), and major group exhibitions include Tracks and Traces(Kunstverein Neuhausen, Germany, 2023) On Collecting Time(Nam June Paik Art Center, 2023).
