Changpo Bridge
Changpo Bridge in Gangneung has deep cultural and historical significance as one of the
main venues of the Gangneung Danoje Festival. Since Gangneung Danoje Festival was
designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, the bridge has become a central site that attracts thousands of visitors annually. Spanning the Namdaecheon River, it serves as a crucial link to Danojang, the festival’s main event venue, allowing participants to cross and fully immerse themselves in the festivities.
The name Changpo Bridge is intrinsically tied to the rituals and traditions of Gangneung
Danoje Festival. The changpo (sweet flag) plant has long been believed to ward off evil
spirits and promote health, playing a significant role in the festival’s spiritual and ceremonial practices. In honor of this symbolism, the bridge was named Changpo Bridge, and it remains a key site for major Gangneung Danoje Festival rituals and events.
As a historic venue of Gangneung Danoje Festival, Changpo Bridge now takes on a new role in contemporary artistic expression. At GIAF25, the bridge becomes an en plein air exhibition space, bringing art to the public offering visitors a unique visual experience in the open air.
