Okcheon-dong Warehouse
Located near the Dongbu Market, the Okcheondong Warehouse sits at the heart of an area undergoing active urban regeneration. Once used as a grain storage facility and a cold storage warehouse, the site remained unused for a while. Seeking to reimagine this dormant space as a platform for culture and art, the second edition of the Gangneung International Art Festival (GIAF23) turned it into an open exhibition space. That year, Sunmin Park presented The Ears and Eyes of Noam centered on the historic Noam Tunnel in Gangneung. The poetry received enthusiastic responses from both the local community and visiting audiences, laying the foundation for the space’s continued role at the Gangneung International Art Festival 2025 (GIAF25).
Today, the Okcheon-dong Warehouse functions as a converging point between urban renewal and artistic activity—emerging as a symbolic space where everyday space expands into artistic canvas. While the physical structure remains unchanged, the interactions it hosts generate a new kind of vitality on top of the traces of its past.
At GIAF25, Jung Yeondoo’s Syncopation #5 occupied this space. His work, rooted in the theme of the Gangneung Danoje Festival, unfolded across performance, installation, and video— interweaving time and space to keep the site alive as a place of artistic engagement. Rather than confining itself to the timeframe of the festival, the project extended its spirit and the memory of the place into the realm of contemporary art, leaving a lasting impression on viewers. In doing so, Okcheon-dong Warehouse has continued to embody both past and present, the spatial identity and creative vision—contributing to the shaping of Gangneung’s cultural landscape.
