Changpo Bridge

Changpo Bride in Gangneung serves as one of the major venues for the Gangneung Danoje (Dano Festival of Gangneung). It has played an important role in attracting many visitors annually since Danoje was designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Crossing the Namdaecheon River in Gangneung, Changpo Bridge connects to Danojang, the main event venue of Danoje, serving as a central passage for participants to cross and enjoy the festivities.
The name Changpo Bridge itself is deeply associated with the Gangneung Danoje. Chanpo (sweet flag) has been considered a plant that wards off evil spirits and promotes health, holding significant meaning in the rituals and traditions of Danoje. In honor of this symbolism, the bridge was named Changpo Bridge, and major events of Danoje and its rituals take place on the bridge and its surrounding areas.
Having traditionally served as a central venue for the Gangneung Danoje, Changpo Bridge’s historical significance is now being highlighted through contemporary art. The Gangneung International Art Festival 2025(GIAF25) exhibits artworks on Changpo Bridge, introducing art to a wide audience. This exhibition, which is grounded on the bridge visited by many people, encourages visitors to interact with art in an everyday setting, offering a whole new visual perspective. It transforms Changpo Bridge into a symbolic site where Gangneung’s history and contemporary art intertwine.
