Suh Dasom’s latest project, is a continuation of her long-term series, which began in 2019. By isolating aspects of everyday life and closely observing them, Suh translates these themes into more direct and hands-on experiences, often using food as a medium. For this work, Suh explores the mythical figure of the dokkaebi, legendary creatures in Korean folklore, often described as goblin-like beings with supernatural power. Unlike the goblins of Western myths, dokkaebi can be both tricksters and benefactors, rewarding those who are kind and punishing the greedy or wicked. The project unfolds in two workshops. In the first workshop, the artist conducts research in attempt to find people who embody the characteristics of dokkaebi. Then, these individuals are invited to a private gathering, which is recorded on film. At the festival hosting the second workshop, small groups of six audience members listen to dokkaebi stories while watching a video from the first workshop. Afterwards, they share a meal inspired by the artist’s interpretation of what dokkaebi would indulge in. With her new experimental piece, Suh invites audiences to embrace the wisdom of modern-day dokkaebi and reflect it in their own lives.
