Sinyeong Theater
Established in 2012, Sinyeong Theater stands as Gangwon-do’s only dedicated cinematheque, exclusively showcasing independent and art films. The venue carries forward the legacy of the former Sinyeong Theater, a historic cinema that connected Gangneung’s citizens with film culture for over 11 years since the 1960s.
The cinema has been operated by Gangneung Cinematheque, a non-profit private organization, which also founded the Jeongdongjin Independent Film Festival in 1999. Cinematheque screens both Korean independent films and international art films, including curated films by renowned directors such as Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, and more. It also provides Gangneung citizens with opportunities to explore and interpret films through diverse programs, including lectures and small gatherings.
Equipped with a 4K digital projection system and 111 seats, including wheelchair-accessible seating, the theater ensures an immersive cinematic experience while maintaining an intimate and community-focused atmosphere.
Following the success of GIAF23, where the cinema presented the works of Francis Alÿs to great acclaim, GIAF25 now features the works of Ho Tzu Nyen at Sinyeong Theater. Through these exhibitions, Sinyeong Theater continues to expand its role beyond traditional cinema, bridging film, visual art, and contemporary storytelling. Offering Gangneung’s citizens diverse and enriching artistic experiences.
