ABOUT

Gangneung

Gangneung is a city located in Gangwon province by the east of the Taebaek Mountains, which is considered the ‘waist’ of the Korean peninsula. The East side follows beautiful beaches with the East Sea, and to the west are the inner side of Hongcheon County, the Pyeongchang County, where the Olympic Winter Games was held in 2018. Gangneung has various cultural resources that can be highlighted as tourism contents when recalling the urban landscape, and especially with places related to major historical sites and figures.

To introduce one of the historical events in Gangneung, it would be Danoje. Gangneung Danoje (The Gangneung Danoje Festival) is a local festival in Korea which is selected as the 13th Important Intangible Cultural Properties of Korea, which culminates on the fifth day of the fifth month of the year according to the lunar calendar. Gangneung Danoje has the longest history among Korean local festivals and its main purpose is to worship the guardian spirit of a mountain which protects the town and pray for the peace of the town and all families and prosperity of farming. It was designated as part of South Korea’s Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO on November 25, 2005.
