Suh Dasom’s latest project, , is a continuation of her long-term series , which began in 2019. By isolating aspects of everyday life and closely observing them, Suh translates these themes into more direct and hands-on experiences, often using food as a medium.
For this work, Suh explores the mythical figure of the dokkaebi, legendary creatures in Korean folklore, often described as goblin-like beings with supernatural power. Unlike the goblins of Western myths, dokkaebi can be both tricksters and benefactors, rewarding those who are kind and punishing the greedy or wicked.
The project unfolds in two workshops. In the first workshop, the artist conducts research in attempt to find people who embody the characteristics of dokkaebi. Then, these individuals are invited to a private gathering, which is recorded on film. At the festival hosting the second workshop, small groups of six audience members listen to dokkaebi stories while watching a video from the first workshop. Afterwards, they share a meal inspired by the artist’s interpretation of what dokkaebi would indulge in. With her new experimental piece, Suh invites audiences to embrace the wisdom of modern-day dokkaebi and reflect it in their own lives.
SUH Dasom (b. 1984) explores the value of effort, care, and handcraft in everyday life, bringing attention to the significance of manual labor and traditional craftsmanship in a rapidly evolving society.
Her work reflects a deep engagement with social phenomena and historical narratives, which she seamlessly weaves into contemporary life. The artist’s primary forms of expression integrate cooking, sewing, and other hands-on practices. SUH creates project-based artistic experiments that blur the boundaries between art, daily rituals, and communal experiences while continuously uncovering new ways to reinterpret the mundane.
SUH’s major solo exhibitions include Excuse Me, Is There a Flower Shop Around Here? (Art District_ p, 2021) and Living, Eating, Sleeping (Gallery Hyeyum, 2022). The artist’s major group exhibitions include the Gwangju Biennale’s May 18th Venice Special Exhibition To Where the Flowers are Blooming (Spazio Berlendis, Venice, Italy, 2022). Additionally, the recent workshops conducted include, When the moon sets and the sea remains (STUDIO Practice Makes Practice, 2024), Fluffy Fluffy Bling Bling (The Willow 1955, 2023), and Life, Meal, Sleep (Gallery Hyeyum, 2022).
