홍순명의 <서유록 – 홍씨 이야기>는 페스티벌의 주제이자 기획의 동기인 「서유록」을 남긴 강릉 김씨의 여정을 따라간다. 작가는 이번 페스 티벌 작업을 위해 김씨가 경험했을 것이라 상상되는 풍경을 수집했다. 110여 년 전 김씨가 만난 경관을 현시대를 살아가는 작가가 다시 만날 수는 없으니 작가는 가능한 근접한 장소를 탐색했다. 김씨가 대관령을 넘어 서울로 가기 위해 걸었을 ‘대관령 옛길’을 직접 걸으며 강릉에서 바라본 대관령의 경관, 서울에 가던 중 마주했던 평창군 운교리, 진부면의 모로재 고개, 양평군의 두물머리 등 그녀가 여행기에서 언급한 장 소들을 방문했다. 이와 함께 1910년대 김씨가 마주했을 서울의 사대문 중 강릉 김씨가 일제의 수탈에 안타까워했던 사대문, 개화된 서울의 모습 등도 함께 찾아 모았다. 작가는 이처럼 그녀가 강릉을 떠나 서쪽으로 다녀온 여정의 풍경을 하나의 화면에 겹쳐 표현하며 새롭게 감각 된 상상의 풍경화를 보여준다. .
In the latest work, Seo-Yu-Rok, the Tales of Mr.Hong, HONG Soun follows the journey of Lady Kim of Gangneung from the book Seo-Yu-Rok, the underlying theme and motive of the festival. The landscapes that Kim may have encountered based on the book were collected for this work. It is simply not possible to picture the exact scenery that Kim would have encountered 110 years ago. However, the artist has explored possible proximities: the sight of Daegwallyeong when walking the Old Daegwallyeong Road, the town of Ungyo-ri in Pyeongchang on the way to Seoul, Morijae Hills of Jinburyeong, Dumulmeori in Yangpyeong, etc. the places where the book mentions. Images of Seoul in the midst of its modernization and Sadaemun, where Kim witnessed and grieved at the presence of the Japanese colonial empire are collected together. In this way, HONG Soun overlays the landscapes of Kim’s journey from Gangneung to Seoul heading west on a single canvas, presenting a newly sensed imaginative landscape.

홍순명은 부산대학교 사범대학 미술교육학과를 졸업하고 프랑스 파리국립고등미술학교(에꼴 데 보자르)를 졸업했다. 작가는 사소하고 파편적인 사건들을 수집, 집적하고, 사건의 중심이 되는 이미지보다는 주변부에 집중해 이를 캔버스로 옮긴다. 이처럼 ‘부분과 전체’를 작업의 주제로 삼는 작가는 작은 부분을 변주하고 환유하는 과정을 통해 전체를 관통하는 주제에 천착하는 방식으로 현시대 삶의 조건과 문제에 대해 고민한다.
주요 개인전으로 《비스듬히 떨어지는 풍경 – 재난, 가족》(사비나미술관, 2022), 《흔한 믿음, 익숙한 오해》 (조현화랑, 2020-2021), 《장밋빛 인생》(대구미술관, 2017-2018) 등이 있으며, 주요 그룹전으로는 《누구의 이야기》(부산현대미술관, 2022-2023), 《나너의 기억》(국립현대미술관 서울, 2022), 《DMZ》(문화역서울284, 2019)등이 있다. 제1회 호반미술상(2023), 제17회 이인성미술상(2016), 제1회 전혁림 미술상(2015)을 수상한 바 있다.
HONG Soun graduated in Art Education from Busan National University and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, France. The artist collects trivial and fragmentary events, aggregates them, and transfers them to the canvas by focusing on the peripheral parts in the image of the central event. The main theme of part and whole penetrates the entirety through the process of transformation and metonymy of small parts, bringing focus towards the conditions and issues of contemporary life.
The artist major solo exhibitions include Sidescape – Disaster, Family (SAVINA Museum of Contemporary Art, 2022), Typical belief, Typical misconception (Johyun Gallery, 2020-2021), and La vie en rose (Daegu Art Museum, 2017-2018), and the artist’s major group exhibitions include Whose Story Is This (Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, 2022-2023), My Your Memory (The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, 2022), and DMZ (Culture Station Seoul 284, 2019). The artist was awarded the 1st Hoban Artist Awards in 2023, the 17th Lee In-sung Art Prize in 2016, and the 1st Jeon Hyukrim Art Prize in 2015.
