이우성은 일상 속 어느 날 문득 삶의 주변에 자리한 대상을 발견하며 작업을 시작한다. 현재를 함께 살아가는 사람들의 이야기를 찾아 이들의 소박한 일상과 개인의 감정들을 표현한다. 이번 페스티벌에서 작가는 무수한 시간을 품은 채 살아온 이야기를 건네는 듯한 시장 안을 거닐며 마주했던 빈 벽에 강릉에서의 추억을 그림으로 걸어 자신이 마주했던 소소하지만 특별했던 순간들을 관람객에게 공유한다. 동부시장 레인보우(233호)를 비롯하여 시장 2층 곳곳에서 선보이는 8점의 연작 <흐르고 흘러 강릉에서>는 바닷가 주변에서 본 사람들, 같이 여행 온 일행들의 모습을 그린 그림이다. 작가는 누군가의 뒷모습을 유심히 바라보면 그 사람을 다르게 인지하게 되는데, 이는 마치 보는 이의 마음을 투영해서 보는 풍경과 같다고 말한다. 오래 머물며 무언가를 바라볼 때 비로소 보이는 것이 있듯이 그림 속 사람들과 동부시장이 품고 있는 긴 이야기를 느껴보길 바란다.
For Woosung Lee, the work starts one day by discovering objects that exist on the periphery of daily life. The artist seeks out stories of people living in the present, expressing their humble daily lives and personal emotions. For the festival, he shares moments that seem ordinary but special. These memories of Gangneung are presented on the empty walls he encountered as the market unfolds its stories embracing innumerable amounts of time during his stroll. The series Memories of Gangneung, exhibited in Dongbu Market Rainbow 233 and other various spots on the second floor of the market, portrays people the artist observed around the beach and his travel companions. Woosung Lee says that when you closely observe someone’s back, you perceive them differently, much like projecting one’s own emotions onto a scenery. Just as something becomes visible only when you gaze for a long time, the viewers may feel the stories, the drawings and the market together unfold.

이우성은 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과 학사 졸업 후 한국예술종합학교 조형예술학과 평면전공 전문사를 졸업했다. 작가는 ‘생활과 미술’이라는 주제로 드로잉, 회화, 애니메이션 등의 다양한 매체로 확장한 그리기를 시도하고 있다. 어느 날 문득 삶의 주변에 자리한 대상을 발견하면서 작업을 시작하는 작가는 자신의 사적인 순간이 그림을 통해 또 다른 누군가의 기억에 닿아 연결되기를 희망한다.
주요 개인전으로 《여기 앉아보세요》(학고재갤러리, 2023), 《어쩌면 우리에게 더 멋진 일이 있을지도 몰라》(두산갤러리, 2021), 《당신을 위해 준비했습니다》(학고재갤러리, 2017) 등이 있으며, 주요 그룹전으로는《렌트》(아마도예술공간, 2022), 《개인들의 사회》(부산현대미술관, 2020-2021), 제12회 광주비엔날레 《상상된 경계들》(ACC 국립아시아문화전당, 2018) 등이 있다.
Woosung Lee graduated with a BFA from the Department of Painting at Hongik University and an MFA from the Department of Fine Arts at Korea National University of Arts. Life and art is the main theme that expands into various media such as drawing, painting, and animation in his work. The work starts one day by discovering objects that exist on the periphery of daily life. Through the paintings,
the artist hopes that these intimate moments will touch and connect with someone else’s intimate moments.
The artist’s major solo exhibitions include Come Sit with Me(Hakgojae Gallery, 2023), But some day, one day, soon(DOOSAN Gallery, 2021), and My Dear(Hakgojae Gallery, 2017), and major group exhibitions include Rent(Amado Art Space/Lab, 2022), The Society of Individuals(Museum of Contemporary Art Busan, 2021), and the 12th Gwangju Biennale Imagined Borders(Asia Cultural
Center, 2018). The artist will hold a solo exhibition at Hakgojae Gallery in August 2023.
